I start every department meeting thinking “this time, I’m not going to say much.” This normally lasts about two minutes.

Intellectually, I have learned that, even though I think I can help bring an extended discussion to its end by jumping in, my intervention never quite works that way. I know it doesn’t work. Nevertheless, I try, again and again—maybe this time I’ll have the words of wisdom that stop us from going around in circles—“Well, what about….”

It never works.
